How to avoid turning a bad moment into a bad day
Was it a bad day or was it just a bad moment that ruined your whole day?
We all have bad days and sometimes even bad months (February for me was definitely not a great one.) As I look back and think about it, I probably made it worse than it really was because I was dwelling about the bad moments that lead to these bad days. I think what many people do is exactly that, we hold on to these bad things that happen to us during the day and it puts us in a bad mood which eventually results in everything "going wrong."
Think about a day that something not so great happened. I'll give my example; a car accident. I'm driving to my class, I get hit by a car who ran a red light and now a cluster of things happen. Not only am I missing class, but I now have to go to the hospital, my car was totaled and I need to spend the next month dealing with the insurances and having no car. The way I viewed the incident was as a whole instead of breaking it down and only dealing with the issues as they come up. I spent most of my time worrying about the accident, losing focus on important things like my job and my education. Now my example can be viewed as big or small depending on what each of the issues we deal with is. When you thought about your bad day, did you feel like you dragged it out?
My experience had me thinking about bad days, so I thought I would share some tips that have made such a big difference since that day.
Try and change your mood
Easier said than done I know but our mood about the day is what makes it good or bad. If you woke up every morning and said "I'm going to have a bad day" well then you probably will because you're carrying that mindset with you. Let's say you received a bad grade on a test that puts you in a bad mood. You could be upset about it all day or you could take a moment to be upset, figure out where you went wrong and tell yourself that you'll do better next time, then move on.
You're going to forget about it
Okay, so definitely not the big things; ie: car accident, but moments that put us in a bad mood such as a driver cutting you off on the road .. these moments pass and what we don't realize is we forget about them later that day. If you get agitated on the road, how often do you remember what happened, even by the next day? Funny how we get so worked up over things that don't matter in the long run.
Take a step back
Is this really something to ruin my whole day over? Can it be fixed right now? If not, let it go and do what you can when to can to make the situation better. If it can be fixed right away, try and fix it and move on.
Be grateful
This helps a lot when things aren't going well. Think about all the good things that are happening in your life, even if it is only one thing. We have to remind ourselves that for every bad thing there are always good things. I also think that things could be worse.
Give yourself a break
This might include working out, watching a funny show or movie (this one helps me a lot), making your favorite meal, reading inspirational/motivational quotes. Do something that is going to lift up your spirits. You can read more about this in 5 noticeable signs you need a mental break

ReplyDeleteLove this! A bad moment is definitely not worth ruining an entire day! Sometimes if something goes wrong, I tend to over-analyze & let it dwell for a little longer than necessary but that's definitely something I'm working on! Deep breaths always help too!!
